6 Tips on how to plan the perfect winter wedding

When you think of wedding season you envision sun drenched days in tipis and marquees, guests sipping Pimms on the lawn whilst playing garden games. But what if we told you that winter is slowly becoming the new ‘it’ season to get married! Once you put into account stunning low light, roaring fires, rich, bold, sexy colour palettes and more availability with your favourite suppliers, you can totally see why more and more couples are snapping up the colder months! We absolutely love shooting this time of year so check out our tips on how to make your winter wedding run smoothly.

get married earlier!

Winter brings the epic low light that all photographers dream of, it also means the days are much shorter and it gets dark very quickly, not ideal if you are hoping to have naturally lit images for the majority of the day. Also keep in mind that whoever may be conducting your ceremony may have a ban on flash photography, thus making capturing this special and highly important part of the day very technically challenging. We would suggest getting married no later than 1pm to allow for all your group and couple images to be shot in as much natural daylight as possible.

Go for a ‘first look’!

If having said all of the above about getting married sooner and you’ve still got your heart set on a later ceremony then why not consider having a first look? It’s such a beautiful moment for you both to secretly see each other before the ceremony and you also get to take advantage of the light. We have always found this approach to be just, if not more, emotional than seeing each other for the first time at the top of the aisle. That could be down to it feeling so private and intimate, just you two and your photographer, who will probably be crying their eyes out behind the camera.

Dress to Impress!

Think fur coats, leather jackets, Dr Martin boots, festive, rich tones, extra sequins and snazzy tweed suits! We tend to think winter allows you to get more creative with your outfits adding layers that you wouldn’t be able to in the hotter months.

put on a feast!

We don’t know about you but when we think of winter cuisine it’s all about big hearty roasts, mulled wine or cider, cheese and biscuits, s’mores and sticky toffee pudding! Hosting your wedding when it’s cold and crisp outside opens your menu possibilities to amazing comfort food which is perfect to soak up the booze!

be flexible

Although the weather in the UK is pretty unpredictable 99.9% of the time winter is obviously known to be wet, windy, dark and very chilly. But don’t let that put you off or spoil the days agenda, as long as you are willing to jump outside when there is a break in the rain and perhaps be up for getting creative inside your venue then you’re all set for stunning imagery. Just trust your photographer and make peace with the fact your dress may get a little wet at the bottom, your noses feel frosty but it will all be worth it for your timeless photos that you’ll cherish forever.

Just GO FOR IT!

And lastly but no means least, just bloody embrace it! If you’re getting hitched in December then go all out on the festive vibes! Think joyous reds, greens and metallics with tonnes of holly and ivy. Or perhaps golden, autumnal tonnes are more your thing? If you’re a lover of halloween then roll out the pumpkins! November is all about bonfire night, crack out the sparklers and fireworks and start roasting marshmallows! Whatever you want your wedding to be like just jump right in and go all out, your guests will love it and you’ll find sticking to a theme will make planning less confusing and stressful.
